Australia drop Celtic's Skippy for Oman clash

Celtic striker Scott McDonald has been dropped by Australia after Pim Verbeek opted to look at other options ahead of next year's World Cup.

McDonald has been guilty of wasting a plethora of chances for Celtic (then again, who hasn't) and has never scored for his country despite winning 15 caps. Verbeek has indicated McDonald won't be considered even if Nagoya Grampus striker Josh Kennedy is not fit for the upcoming Asian Cup qualifier against Oman.

Verbeek was quoted by scotsman.com as saying: "With Scott McDonald, for the moment I have enough strikers available. If I lose Josh for this game, I will probably take another player.

"We don't have another player like Josh Kennedy, that's clear, so maybe we have to look and find a different player. Scott is a different type of player to Josh. There's some players doing well in the A-League at the moment. They are on the list."

The Australia coach appears to be following one of the basic rules of football: if a player isn't performing to a high enough standard, give someone else a chance - though a national coach has a far bigger pool of players to select from than, for example, Tony Mowbray.

McDonald has himself spoken of how he wants to put his Europa League disappointment behind him and find the net against Falkirk on Sunday (Nov 8), assuming he is selected by Mowbray. With Marc-Antoine Fortune, the boss has some decisions to make and, hopefully, the goals will start flowing.

Out of form or not, it would make sense to call up a player, on short notice, from either Australia or Japan than Scotland!

Missed another great chance against Hamburg. He's missing big Jan I think!!!

That's a scary thought. Last year wasn't great for him and this year has carried on with more of the same. Let's hope Fortune starts getting involved now he's fit again.

Skippy, fairly or perceived projects a certain attitude and image, you can get away with this if you’re doing the business. He is not and needs to either knuckle down and get back to the same attitude as his first season, or he needs to look for a move away. When you watch him in his first season he is a completely different player, he does not excerpt a fraction of the effort he showed in his first season and it shows.
