Celtic rumours: McDonald out, Giroud in?

Celtic striker Scott McDonald has been linked with a £4million move to Wigan in January - although the fee may not be paid until the summer.

Wigan, who are currently 14th in the Premier League, attempted to sign the Australia international on the summer deadline day but were unsuccessful. McDonald has scored 12 goals so far this season (assuming his tally against St Mirren at the weekend is recorded as two) but has not been an ever-present.

According to the Evening Times, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez wants to sign McDonald on loan in January ahead of a permanent deal in the summer - which would make sense for the English side as they wouldn't be financially committed until they knew whether they had secured their Premier League status for another season.

However, unless the Celtic board are thinking of handing Tony Mowbray a sizeable transfer kitty, it's not unreasonable to assume a deal in January would be far more beneficial from the seller's viewpoint. Rumours suggest Mowbray is eyeing-up 23-year-old striker Olivier Giroud, who currently plays for Tours in the French second division, so perhaps the cash would be welcome.

While Scott McDonald has a fairly decent scoring record since joining from Motherwell for just £600,000 in the summer of 2007, it's not hard to imagine the sale being made in order to generate cash - the difference between £600,000 and £4,000,000 is hard to miss and would easily cover the £2million Giroud is estimated to be worth.

I watched Birmingham versus Wolves on the weekend. Don't ever tell me that the EPL is loaded with good teams. There are four teams that are of a high standard. the rest are no better than the other ten SPL teams. This game was shocking. The skill level was in the gutter. The passing ability was non existent. The coaching abilities of both coaches was terrible. The level in the EPL when you pass by the top four.............garbage, just like ours.

Would honestly be sad to see skippy go. Although he's been frustrating the past two seasons, he's still be the most reliable when it comes to getting goals. That being said, Giroud is fantastic player, one I would certainly welcome in the Celtic shirt.

'weetim67' sounds a little bitter. Arguably an unbiased football fan would say Spurs were playing very well this season, are they 'top four'? Man. City have players who could and have played for 'top four' teams. Let's see how many 'top four' teams have Aston Villa beat so far? Chelski and Liverpool are two after only one third of the season gone. Not surprisngly your argument is founded upon irrationality and hatred for a superior product.
