Celtic's Caldwell in demand across Europe...cough!

If press speculation is to be believed, Celtic defender Gary Caldwell is one of the most sought after defenders in Germany.

Okay, that may be a slight exaggeration but newspapers have claimed the 27-year-old Scotland international has attracted the interest of Wolfsburg, Hannover '96 and Schalke 04. Burnley are also thought to be monitoring the situation.

Caldwell is out of contract at the end of the season and, with negotiations regarding extending his Celtic career seemingly unlikely to succeed, Celtic may opt to sell the player in January for a small fee rather than receive nothing on the summer.

How a player such as Caldwell can be linked with three fairly sizeable German clubs is unclear but if his agent hopes to stir up interest, he may have overplayed his hand. A move to Burnley is believable at a push, only if because Caldwell's brother is captain of the English Premier League side.

But does anybody really believe Caldwell has attracted the attention of clubs across Europe? He may have performed well last season - which may have been because others played poorly - but it's not as though he as been an impenetrable rock in the heart of the defence.

Gary has been terrible this seaon so far and also too big in the mouth. However, it is a bit unfair to slate his performances last season. In fact, the season before too. He was the stalwart in our defense when we won the title in Dundee May 22nd 2008. He had been solid for us for weeks. He isn't good enough to be a Celtic legend though. Let him go to whoever will pay.

Shalke are swamped with debt, they wont pay a pound and wolfsburg have 4 central defenders. If ANYthing, the move to Hannover is the most likely...
