From Korea, Hearts and France to Celtic?

Take one young Korean midfielder, a defender from Hearts and a striker from a second-rate French side and what do you have? At a guess, Celtic's January transfer window acquisitions!

Of the three suggestions, Ki Sung-Yong is by far the most likely as he has already agreed to move to Parkhead next month - though the Asian Young Player of the Year still needs a work permit, something which isn't meant to cause too many problems.

The Hearts defender is Jose Goncalves, who is out of contract in the summer but, assuming Gary Caldwell leaves in January, could be signed for a relatively small fee in the New Year. The 24-year-old from Portugal can play at left-back and centre-back, which would offer a degree of cover.

According to the Scottish Sun Goncalves has "has made it clear he will be quitting Tynecastle" and that has "alerted Hoops boss Tony Mowbray who is drawing up signing targets for defence, midfield and attack".

The rumour appears possible as Celtic have not been afraid of signing players from fellow SPL sides in recent windows, such as Scott Brown, Scott McDonald, Willo Flood, Barry Robson, Paul Hartley, Steven Pressley, etc.

With transfer speculation being what it is and, dare it be said, agents being what they are, it should come as no surprise that Tours striker Olivier Giroud is rumoured as being linked to eight clubs - Celtic, Middlesbrough, Spurs, Portsmouth and four top-flight French sides.

It has been claimed Mowbray watched the 23-year-old on Friday and could be tempted to make a £1.9million bid in the summer, though it's hard to imagine the board allowing anything remotely resembling a bidding war with clubs down south.

Fortunately, expecting the very worst in life is not a bad tactic and one that may be worth employing ahead of the January window. If the very worst is expected, then anything else is a bonus. So perhaps it's best to remember the Flood that arrived last January - it has to be better than that, surely?

Letting Paul Hartley go has been Celtics biggest error this season. Paul made others play around him, never hid, and cemented the back line when he played in his proper position. We have too many fringe players and seem to be going back to the days of bringing people in from all over the globe who have nothing in common with each other. Hell, half of them can hardly speak English, and none with the Scottish accent! By the time these guys get to know each other we will have toossed away some more valuable points. We are still miles and miles the best squad in the country, but as we found out in Tommy Burns' time, good players don't always make a good team. Get guys in that know the Scottish game and what the passion means to pull on those hoops. Let the fringe guys go and play elsewhere. They deserve that to preserve their own dignity. keep Robson though. He is one player who can make a difference.
