Scott Brown named new Celtic captain

Scott Brown has been named Celtic's new captain following the departure of Stephen McManus to Middlesbrough on loan.

Ahead of Sunday's Scottish Cup clash with Dunfermline, Tony Mowbray announced the Scotland international midfielder will be handed the armband when he is fit and highlighted Brown's determination to win matches.

Brown made his first appearance since October when he replaced left-back Lee Naylor during Tuesday night's 1-0 loss at Kilmarnock, in one of the strange substitutions he is likely to be involved in. While he may not be quite at full fitness, the new responsibility will hopefully fire him on to fulfil his potential.

Mowbray said: "Scott Brown is at the stage in his career where the responsibility will be good for him. I understand Scott's personality. He wants to win and he wants to be a winner out on the field.

"He pushes himself extremely hard for that and that's not a bad ingredient to have sometimes. We shouldn't be criticising him for the fire in his belly. When Scott's fit and available and in the team, then he will lead the team out with the armband on."

At least the search for a new captain - and everyone will differ on whether the appointment is the right or wrong one - has not dragged on for as long as it did before McManus was given the role, following quote after quote from then boss Gordon Strachan about the sort of player he wanted for the job.

And while Brown would no doubt prefer to be given the armband under better conditions, as opposed to when Celtic are in danger of slipping to third in the league, being appointed captain of the club is undoubtedly still an honour any player would be proud of.

I wish him well as our club captain (even if he's the 5th captain in as many weeks!) and hope that we see his positive side because if we do then it will only be good for celtic. His energy and will to win is commendable. The fact that he cannot pass a ball and makes dumb tackles will hopefully be less prevalent with the responsibility of his new role. I just pray that we turn this season round in some style now and make the greatest comeback since... ... ... ... john travolta in pulp fiction.

Time will tell, but congratulations to Skoosh.

Hopefully this is the kick up the backside that makes him show us he was worth buyiong. Nothing he has done so far tells me he is worth what we paid for him. So far, he has been hiding his talent. McManus was never a captain. He was an aweful choice. Brown is probably the only player in the squad, not loan players, who has the ability to drag other by the scruff of their necks the way Lennon did.
