'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Next Celtic 'keeper: Zaluska, Speroni or James?

Lukasz Zaluska has said he is ready to become first-choice goalkeeper at Celtic following the departure of his friend Artur Boruc, though press reports have linked England international David James with a move to Glasgow.

According to the Daily Mail, James is set to hold talks with Celtic after Portsmouth withdrew a contract offer. Whether paying the wages 39-year-old James would command would be a sensible option especially given his age, is questionable.

If Celtic do opt to promote a current squad member after Boruc's £1.7million move to Fiorentina, fellow Pole Zaluska is well-placed to make the position his own. Since joining from Dundee United in June 2009, Zaluska's opportunities have been limited but he has looked assured enough.

The Scottish Sun quoted Zaluska as saying: "With Artur gone then I have to look upon this as my chance. I played a few times last season and I think I'm ready to be No1. He is an icon and they are very big shoes to fill but hopefully I can be regarded like he was. I don't feel any added pressure.

"Being No1 at Celtic is a very big thing. I am aware of that and I am aware that the manager will probably bring in another keeper. At a club as big as this you need competition. But I am not afraid of that because I'm ready for the competition. Listen, after Artur I am not afraid of any competition."

A third alternative being touted (assuming, for one scary moment, David James is actually an option!), is Crystal Palace's Argentine goalkeeper Julian Speroni. However, Palace boss George Burley denied knowledge of any interest yesterday - but the whisper doing the rounds is that Celtic are very interested.

NO NOT JAMES!

Wages will make it a non-starter, but worth a laugh just to think about it. Would be a good example of squandering the cash we'll get (surely?) for Aiden.

Speroni's not a bad goalkeeper but not sure whether he is that much better than Zaluska to be worth buying. Depends how much money we get and what Lenny is allowed to do with it.
