Republic of Ireland international striker Kevin Doyle admitted he was very tempted at the prospect of a loan move to Celtic.

"It would have been a great opportunity at a massive club for four or five months" - Kevin Doyle
However, the 29-year-old was eventually persuaded to remain with current club Wolverhampton Wanders as a late switch to Glasgow fell through on deadline day.

"Obviously Celtic are in a fantastic position, going into the Champions League last 16 and at the top of their league," Doyle explained to stv.tv. "It would have been a great opportunity at a massive club for four or five months.

"But in the end, the chairman at Wolves convinced me that they wanted me to stay on, so it was as simple as that," he added. "Once the club decided I was staying, that was it, that was the end of it. Wolves are a very big club and a very good club. The aim was to get back promoted."

Doyle was making his comments at the Three FAI International Football Awards ceremony in Dublin on Sunday evening.

Celtic moved into the Champions League group stage despite a 4-3 qualifying play-off second-leg defeat at FC Astana.

The Hoops already carried a resounding 5-0 advantage from the opening game, but it was suddenly reduced when Dimitri Shomko's 26th minute effort was deflected into his own net by Kristoffer Ajer.

However, Scott Sinclair soon curled a superb reply, although Serikzhan Muzhikov and Patrick Twumasi both struck during a two-minute spell early in the second-half.
