Wanyama row rumbles on

Celtic have defended themselves following criticism from midfielder Victor Wanyama's agent.

"We work to the highest standards and in the interests of the club, our supporters and indeed our players" - Club spokesperson
He has insisted that the Kenyan international wouldn't be forced into joining Southampton in a 12.5m deal while stating his client had already lost out when being denied a move to Queens Park Rangers last summer.

Barcelona-based agent Ivan Modia also said the 21-year-old had gone two years without a pay increase at Parkhead.

It follows earlier claims down south that Wanyama's proposed move to Southampton had collapsed because his representatives were demanding a 1m fee.

The whole scenario has angered Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell, who had already seen a number of improved contract offers to the player turned down over the last twelve months.

Meanwhile, sources close to Lawwell believe Wanyama's advisers rejected a bumper deal that would have doubled the value of the player's contract in a bid to force his sale.

"These negotiations like any others, are carried out by Celtic in a proper, private and professional manner," said a club spokesperson, reports the Daily Record. "Celtic carries out its business with integrity, we work to the highest standards and in the interests of the club, our supporters and indeed our players. We do not need to comment any further."
