Celtic's young side went down 2-1 to Borussia Monchengladbach in their final pre-season friendly at Parkhead.

The visitors went in front when Granit Xhaka struck a twenty-yard finish nine minutes before the interval.

Substitute Branimir Hrgota added a second midway through the second-half before Anthony Stokes replied from a 74th minute free-kick.

Newcomers Steven Mouyokolo and Amido Balde were both included from the start and joined by youngsters Darnell Fisher, Calum Waters, John Herron and Callum McGregor.

Amin Younes hoisted over during a lively start from the visitors and Lukas Rupp was then denied on the line by Fisher.

The German side continued to appear the more dangerous and home goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska blocked from Max Kruse, who then saw another effort charged down.

But when McGregor's pass was intercepted on 36 minutes, Xhaka strode forward before drilling in off the underside of the crossbar.

Celtic made changes at the break and Balde had a shot diverted wide while Stokes delivered a free-kick into the side-netting.

However, the visitors doubled their advantage on 66 minutes as substitute Hrgota despatched into the corner before a foul on Joe Ledley allowed Stokes to reply from the edge of the area.
