Kris Commons believes Celtic are under increased pressure to progress in the Champions League this season.

"European football keeps everyone interested, not only at Celtic but in Scotland" - Kris Commons
The Scottish champions visit KR Reykjavik on Tuesday night in the second qualifying round of the competition.

And Commons reckons that having lost both Edinburgh clubs from the domestic top-flight this season, it's really important they fully make their mark in Europe.

"We've lost a couple of big hitters in our top flight so it's vital for entertainment value that we are coming up against Europe's elite," he told BBC Scotland. "European football keeps everyone interested, not only at Celtic but in Scotland.

"I think we're expected to win the league and run close for every cup competition as well, so there's always that pressure on us," Commons added. "But for our own personal pride the Champions League is the place to be and we want to be putting ourselves up against Europe's elite."

Meanwhile, manager Ronny Deila has confirmed Charlie Mulgrew will captain the side against Reykjavik in the absence of the injured Scott Brown.

FC Astana 4 Celtic 3 (AGG 4-8)

Celtic moved into the Champions League group stage despite a 4-3 qualifying play-off second-leg defeat at FC Astana.

The Hoops already carried a resounding 5-0 advantage from the opening game, but it was suddenly reduced when Dimitri Shomko's 26th minute effort was deflected into his own net by Kristoffer Ajer.

However, Scott Sinclair soon curled a superb reply, although Serikzhan Muzhikov and Patrick Twumasi both struck during a two-minute spell early in the second-half.
