Midfielder sidelined after surgery

Midfielder sidelined after surgery

Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong is facing a spell on the sidelines following surgery.

The 25-year-old underwent a hernia operation in Germany yesterday, reports the Daily Record.

Armstrong had been struggling with the condition over recent weeks and it was felt the January break was the ideal opportunity to sort out the problem.

He signed a new two-year-deal with the champions last August having arrived from Dundee United in 2015.

Celtic return to action against Brechin City in the Scottish Cup fourth round this weekend.

Reaction of champions - Rodgers

Manager Brendan Rodgers says Celtic showed champions' credentials in their 2-0 victory at Aberdeen.

Aberdeen 0 Celtic 2

Both teams had a player sent-off as Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic accounted for third-placed Aberdeen 2-0 at Pittodrie.

Moussa Dembele headed in at the far post from James Forrest's cross to earn them an interval advantage.

But defender Mikael Lustig picked up a second yellow card and was dismissed with fourteen minutes remaining.

However, fellow full-back Kieran Tierney still added a second goal before home substitute Sam Cosgrove was sent-off for a bad late challenge
