Leaving Celtic may harm Maloney

Celtic coach Tommy Burns has claimed Aston Villa's Shaun Maloney may have ruined his career by leaving Parkhead too soon.

The 24-year-old moved to Villa in January for £1million and, although he scored a decent free-kick against the Faroe Islands for Scotland earlier in the week, he has yet to truly establish himself in the English Premiership.

Burns thinks that Maloney should have stayed at Celtic longer, as legend Kenny Dalglish did before moving to Liverpool, and said that there is a difference between playing in England and being a success there.

He said: "Shaun decided to take the plunge and go there but I told him he should have had three or four years here behind him first. Basically, I think he's gone there too soon. Kenny Dalglish was the perfect example of a player who'd achieved everything he could here. He went to Liverpool at 26 and moved to a different level entirely.

"In bygone days, a player's most important relationship was with his coach, because he made him a better person as well as a better player. Nowadays, though, agents fill their heads with fancy figures and nonsense.

"I'm not saying that Shaun has done the wrong thing. Football's a short career and he has to earn as much money as he can but you also need experience. Kenny played 350 games for Celtic while Shaun's managed about 50. Do you want to play in the Premiership or be a success in it?"

Martin O'Neill has a reported £40million to spend on new players this summer, and it will be interesting to see how close Maloney remains to the first-team picture at Villa Park. However, fans of the Birmingham club seem to have more time for Maloney that Villa's other signing from Celtic, Stiliyan Petrov, who has been largely disappointing in the Premiership.

But overall, it is good to see that Tommy Burns shares the thoughts of many fans about how he thinks players should plan their careers and it's great that he is at Celtic as, arguably, he has more tactical awareness and footballing shrewdness than Gordon Strachan and Martin O'Neill combined.

Was annoyed that wee maloney preffered the money to the prestige but we have more than one good young player at parkhead. Can't see why him and petrov won't be the best players in that team next season as they have already proven themselves internationally and in european club competition. Burns doesn't usually come out with such comments but was prob bewildered as to why maloney left early to go to a team of villa's standing when could have stayed for couple more seasons and joined a bigger club.

I think you'll find that not all Celtic fans are pining for Petrov. He had a number of good years with us. He is a good player, despite his slow start (which he had for Celtic too). But he's gone now and I think we did well from the deal. Since he left, we have won the double, so his absence has not affected us as much as you ight think. I'd advise Villa fans to be patient. He might well surprise you next season.

CL Villa, to be honest with you, over the past 4 months there was nothing to talk about, we won the league in october so our season has been pretty prediticable since then. If you ever won a trophy then you would understand but ill spell it out to you, Usually it comes in the form of a silver cup. Although size and shape may vary. Finally the claret and blue strip was so synonymous with success that in their early days Arsenal, West Ham, Burnley and others followed Villa's colours in respect and homage to our heritage!
