Celtic's joker boss must change

Am I the only one who is getting sick of Celtic boss Gordon Strachan messing about in the transfer market? Where is this man's ambition?

From what I can see, everything is a big joke to him. He'd rather deflect attention away from his awful transfer dealings over the past two seasons than understand that the Celtic fans are sick of being fed a diet of no better than average squad players.

The result is that he has to have a clearout every summer. Luckily for him, he gets money in for some of his mistakes. Then again, who would pay much for Steven Pressley, Paul Hartley or Gary Caldwell? And he'd have to pay some club to take Virgo off our hands...

Kenny Miller, Thomas Gravesen and Jiri Jarosik have all flopped spectacularly, although, in fairness, Miller does give everything when he pulls on the Hoops. But Maciej Zurawski was just never good enough to be a main Celtic striker.

To give Strachan some credit, he has picked up a lot of players for nothing - but surely to God he should be aiming a lot higher than that!

He's had two full seasons in charge, and how many really good players has he managed to bring to our club in that time? Let's face facts, because the true answer is not very many!

Let's look at this summer's buys; Skippy and Killen may not have cost much, but what is that saying about our ambition? Has Strachan learned no lessons at all from filling the squad with average strikers?

As for the midfield, even Stevie Wonder could have picked out Scott Brown! Massimo Donati is a huge gamble, although he might end up being a great signing. I certainly hope he is for our sake - but not Strachan's!

Then for the defence. Strachan has improved it with the addition of Lee Naylor - but that's it! Also, I don't think Mark Wilson is the answer at right-back.

Strachan has the whole world to choose players from, and he has had the cash to bring in quality, but has failed in the past. He has a massive budget this time around, and the early signs are once again far from encouraging.

We will only ever play as well as the standard of our players will allow. That was fully demonstrated last season. We need ambition and quality added to our first team, not our squad, Strachan.

He's had two walks in the park domestically the past two seasons. His teams have consistently struggled to beat even the poorest of teams in the SPL. The fans know how bereft of true quality we are, and Strachan will quickly feel our fury if he fails to deliver quality players this time around.

He still has time to bring top class players in, I for one hope he does, as the fans will not put up with the same level of performance as last season -.that was unacceptable from a Celtic team!

Just because Rangers are a joke and a complete shambles does not mean we should be lowering our standards! If anything, we should be treading them underfoot and leaving them far behind!

Seriously Strachan, get your own act together and stop treating us fans with contempt, we're the ones with genuine ambition, we're the ones who can see the opportunities that are there for us to reach out and grasp.

Take a cue from us, Gordon, and start matching our ambition!

Strachan has his own style, some like it, some don't. Though his transfer dealings are always a bit worrying - he's never done much to really give us much confidence. But a boss is only as good as their last signing, so we'll see what happens!
CowesBhoy
I'd love to argue that we don't know who the club are actually targeting but as written above his track record isn't that impressive, and he has bought some flops. Or were they bought for him?
LarryTL
As soon as the boss leaves the country he's moaned at by fans. You lot should be politicians!

Several posters on this board are never going to accept Strachan, end of. We could win the treble this year and they'd still be complaining. Strachan isn't a great manager, but he's a solid manager that looks to be building a squad. No one could have predicted that Jarosik and Gravesen would be so poor for us. Kenny Miller not scoring was predictable, and he never should have been signed, as you can't signed players based on internationals (his game against Italy). Most still expected Jarosik and Gravesen to boss the midfield, and for Miller to score for fun up here (Which was never going to happen). Also, who could have predicted that Hartley would come to us and all of a sudden become afraid of goal. He had been brilliant at Hearts for three seasons. A lot of his signings just don't seem to be able to cope with the pressure of donning the Hoops. Again, I don't think he's great, but if he continues to progress the team, even if it includes mistakes, then I will be happy. In his first season we were scoring goals for fun. Hopefully now that Lennon has left this will resume.

I'm trying to keep out of this and maintain a mutual posture (ie I'd publish a pro-Strachan piece if one was sent). But I would like to add I'd agree with irishbhoy in part there. Gravesen was from Real Madrid, which shouldn't be a risk, and Miller should have done well. Signing him wasn't really a risk. And to go all the way back to where we were at the start of the season, could Lennon and Gravesen work together? I don't think they could. I don't like to knock him, but Lenny went on a season too long for us and now, without him, the midfield may regain shape and we'll be banging them in again!
Jamie1967
Yes, i read this article on the fourm and i have to say i was quite impressed with the points made. I do not know where to start on GS. The reason that i dont like him has nothing to do with him playing for Aberdeen or anything like that. We he came in i give him my full support and up untill abuot December this year i thought he was doing a great job and i was even telling people that i would prefer him to MON. But Strachan himself has irritated me over the past couple of months. He just cant motivate his players! His track record in the trasnfer market dosent make great reading either. The only good players he has signed has been Boruc and Naylor and to a lesser degree Nakamura. The ambition he has is terrible, signing SPL players is a joke, FFS its one of the worst leagues in Europe. His record agsint Rangers is poor, His Ibrox record is poor, His home record to Rangers is not great, his tactis are not great, his subsitutions are not great, he really does make you feel very insecure at times. I hope he builds a squad that is decent enough so that in a few years time Roy Keane will come in and be a "Celtic" manager. Strachan dosent have what it takes for this job, Celtic fans are starting to realise that! He won the last 2 leagues at a canter, and why? Because Celtic were playing agasint 1 team in the league, themselves, and they still managed to trip up along the way! The only reason we scored for fun in his first season was because of 2 players, Hartson and Petrov. Hartson, a signing by O'Neill and Petrov, another classy player under MON. Hopefully by the end of the summer some of our doubts will be cast aside, maybe he has something up his sleeve, but we have yet to expierence a WOW signing and at this rate i doubt we will see anything half decent at all. FFS £3million for Donnati. Who is he? I wouldnt be suprised if in January Donnati is in the same position as Gravesen now and fans are calling for him to be sold!

Thanks for publishing that Jamie, it took me by surprise when I saw it! lol. I still stand by everything I said, and I'd love nothing better than for our manager to prove me wrong and show some ambition and better judgment in the transfer market for a change.
Celts4me
Great points there RK, and sorry m8, we must both have posted at the same time so I missed your post above. As I've said, its mainly his signings which worry me. I hope he does much better this time and he still has the time and the money to do it.
Celts4me
You just have to be joking!!! The wee mans dealings in the transfer market have put his predessor to shame. At least the chances are we won't be sitting at five minutes to midnight on deadline day to see who we can pay over the odds for! What else has he to do?? He has two leagues, two cups and a great run in Europe, beaten only by the eventual winners of the cup!! Get off his back. I prefer his honesty to MON's deception any day of the week. At least you know he will still be at the helm when the season starts. e could NEVER say that about O'Neil because he never once put the minds of the faithful at ease. Ghord hasn't thrown away money yhe way O'Neil did. He at least gets money back for duds. O'Neil played them or gave them away! There is no way on the planet Martin would have got 1.25 mil for Beattie! 1 million for Maloney when he could have walked away, and even better, between 6 and 8 million for a little baby who wanted to go suck his thimb elsewhere.....Petrov. I think some of you need to open your memory a touch before shooting down the top notch work the wee man has achieved, and with a geriatric squad at that.
weetim67
You miss the point completely, Celts4me; Strachan has proved you and all the doubters wrong in two successive seasons! Strachan had accepted the Celtic job knowing that he was required to cut the wage bill, lower the average age within the squad, raise some much needed transfer funds through sales, keep experience throughout the squad, keep character in the squad, play with flair, keep the fans and the board happy AND turn a losing squad into winners. Guess what? He's done it, TWICE!
brian_bhoy
No Weetim67, they really havent lets be honest. Sutton, Thompson,Lennon and Hartson are all Celtic legends. The only good signings GS has made are LN AB and SS. Nakamura hasent even been that great, id take thompson over him any day of the week. If MON had still be at the club Maloney wouldnt be away, neither would Petrov. You cant honestly keep going on about this Strachan has won 2 leagues argument. MON won 2 leagues after his 1st 2 season, yet he has some compeition. Rangers won the treble and had won the years 2 years on the bounce before he came, and quite convincley at that. GS has had no competiton, his run in europe wasnt that great, he only got to the last 16 on 9 points, MON got 9 points and was unlucky, and sure even big Eck and his miserable bunch of Apes got into the last 16 with 7 points so its not really a great achievement. Look m8 you have your opinions and i have mines but i dont like the way he is managing our club. Atelast we can have a healthy debate about it.
rk1888
weetim67 - I must credit you for so much of what you stated but I don't think Strachan can claim to sell duds for good money.. that is the mark of Peter Lawell who's been brillant, certinaly a god in comparison to that diddy Jock Brown! MON was always running around the transfer market looking for stars and made some good signings; some bad : always late, late, late in the transfer windows tho! I like Stachan and like his predessor he will make good signins and bad signings but as long as the green flag flies above Celtic Park..What the hell do we care!
brian_bhoy
That's another difference between WGS and MON lads. MON ran a club in the Brian Clough mold, meaning he had control of everything. Lawell was there, but MON didn't give him any control over dealings. Sure, this worked in the 80s when the money wasn't like it is now, but not when we're competing in a multi-million pound industry. MON liked to think he had an idea of fiscal management, but his constant whining for money when we were 30 million in debt shows that he didn't. RK, I must disagree with you Celtic legends claim. The only legend in recent years is Larsson, and maybe Sutton. To suggest that Thommo and Lennon, decent, but not great players are legends would belittle the status of the word at our club. IF they were legends their central midfield play wouldn't have been what cost us the league during the helicopter season BTW, that central midfield partnership was what forever turned me off of MON. It showed how unwilling he was to drop his favourites, despite the fact that thommo was never a central midfielder. He one skill was accuracy with his left foot, which meant he could deliver crosses and free kicks. Once moved into the centre beside Lennon, we didn't have a single central mid with any attacking capability.
irishbhoy
brian_bhoy, he's done it twice only because there was no opposition, Your point is blown out of the water by the fact that a good manager over that period would be sitting with TWO TREBLES considering there was no challenge in either of those seasons. Our football has been dire as well, which is a reflection of strachan's poor signings.
Celts4me
weetim67, why are you bringing O'Neill into this? I don't care about what he did or didn't do as he's history!. Lawwell is the man who is getting us top dollar for getting rid of duds, not Strachan. Please stick to points about the current manager or are we going to drag Liam Brady into this next. My points are about strachan's poor signings, nothing else. But i'm not prepared to just ignore his awful buys which have resulted in a poor team out on the park.
Celts4me
Celts4me- I agree that the SPL has been less than taxing for us but that will never change, if one old firm team is not playing well the other wins the title, thats a given! We haven't played champagne football ok, but we did under Burns and at a cost we dropped the odd point and lost the league cause we attacked non-stop. Anyway last season we should not judge on the SPL but on Europe... the eventual winners, make no bones about it struggled to beat us, they were the better side but Strachan called it right and we were hard to beat and nearly even snatched it. The SPL can bring you down to its level sometimes especially when your cruising!
brian_bhoy
Yes brian_bhoy, I agree we were hard to beat over two legs plus extra-time against Milan and I'm not taking that away from GS. But, being 'hard to beat' is a term I associate with Scotland under craig brown. We created virtually no chances in either game against Milan, and we were certainly far from being hard to beat in Benfica and Copenhagen. However, I'm more concerned with our poor performances on the domestic front here, raising our game for home European games should be expected for any Celtic side. How can you possibly compare Tommy Burn's from that era when he had no money to spend?, and at a time when the huns were throwing silly money around. I'm getting fed-up with fans making that nonsensical comparison as if it has any validity or basis in fact. Playing good attacking football should be our aim, not a daft warning from the past. And for what its worth, Burn's would have wiped the floor with the huns at that time if he had been given even half the budget that they got. He nearly managed it despite having nothing. Strachan has no such excuse about lack of finance. At least Burns brought genuine quality to our team with next to no money, and that's what makes a manager in my book.
Celts4me
IB i agree that calling all of them legends was a bit of an over-statement, but all of them players that i mentioned were far better Celtic players than any of our lot at the minute can claim to be, and my point was that Gs hasn't really brought in any great players compared to these great men. Somebody said he turned round a losing squad twice, that's not true because after the 1st season he already had a winning team, and lets be honest we should have been champions in 2005 so he didn't really inherit a "losing team" it wasn't as if Celtic lost the league by 20 points, MON on the other hand did inherit a team who were terrible and who has lost the league by 20 something points. I have no care for all this wage bills and all this financial rubbish. I want a football manager, someone who is good at football not some economics minister. All that is up to someone else, the managers job first and foremost is that the teams plays well and they win. Now the problem some fans is that they cannot see past the ambiguities that Strachan has caused. Yes he won the league twice, but how hard was it? Not very, yet he actually made it look hard by struggling against poor opposition over the course of the season. And if we are to criticise his signings such as Miller,Jarosik,Gravesen etc. for our poor performances, who's fault is it for buying and playing them? I don't care who the Celtic manager is, as long as he does his job well and Strachan is not really doing a great job, he has led some fans into a false sense of security. Some fans are seemingly still rambling on about this achievement of getting into the last 16, if anything to call this an achievement is belliteling our club, no other club apart from the huns would boast of such a mediocre achivement. Some fans are seemingly still rambling on about this achievement of getting into the last 16, if anything to call this an achievement is insulting or "belittling" our club, no other club apart from the huns would boast of such a mediocre achievement. MON got 9 points and didn't get in, so Strachan was just lucky. Look next season he might prove me wrong and to be honest i would love him 2 but i doubt that will happen.
rk1888
I dont understand my last 2 paragraphs :S half cut the nite...
rk1888
I find it shocking that Strachan's credentials are still being doubted. He's signed a few average players but most of his signings have brought success to the club. He's given our youth players more encouragement than any recent previous manager and has worked (up until this pre season) on a limited budget, yet he's still made profit in the transfer market. Nowadays a Celtic signing isn't announced until the contract has been signed. Lawell has stopped leaks from inside the club so people don't have a clue until we see the player wearing the hoops. This annoys the press but it should not annoy Celtic fans. From what I can gather most of you lot should be relocated to the away section next season. Enjoy a golden era in Celtic's history and stop complaining about being too succesful. You sound like huns from 9 in a row.
TDBhoy
Celts4me- Your a 100% right about Burns not having money and Rangers spending for fun, I would be the last person to criticise Burns and his style of football as I regard him very highly and when MON was leaving I wanted Burns in! It was not a nonscensical comparison and while I accept that we haven't played GREAT football, I was pointing out that with the restrictions that Strachan has been forced to deal with and the enormity of the task in overhauling the squad that we simply shouldn't have expected GREAT football let alone winning football! Burns tried and to a point achieved both but ultimately it cost him his job; Strachan has used his experience of managing struggling English clubs and stabilising them to turn Celtics fortunes around. I loved the MON era but any Celtic fan would have to admit (if being completely honest) that the main reason for its success was one Henrik Larsson and when he left we struggled and ultimately MON's team ran out of steam and became a shadow of their former selves. Wee Gordon has turned the squad over dramatically and deserves the upmost respect for that, now at long last he appears to have a decent (tho far less than afforded to MON) level of financial support and only from now on can we expect WGS to put out a team that combines flair, power and ability whilst being successful also! Being honest, do you think that you would have been a fan of Strachans or happy with the state of Celtic if we'd played lovely football week in week out but lost the league to whoever in the past two seasons? Winning has given Wee Gordon and Celtic the financial clout to move forward like hopefully we now will and at the end of the season it would be much fairer to make judgement on Strachans Celtic, if I'm wrong and he fails miserably to improve us and win honours, I'll eat my hat, my words and probably even snack size Strachan but until then he and Celtic will recieve my complete backing and I expect other so called loyal fans to give the manager and team the same, as one united happy Celtic minded family (it will also kill the Gers to see unity cause mark my words they have only papered over the cracks at Ibrox)!
brian_bhoy
Burns should be gagged by Celtic. He's in love with Walter Smith and constantly talks thhey *****ers up in the press. This dates back to when Walter used to give him a good seeing to at least twice a season in the mid 90's. He had plenty to spend when he was our manager. He just bought 3 headcases and Alan Stubbs. They cost millions! He never thought he could beat Rangers, that was his problem. God knows what tripe he drips down to the players about Rangers "There's no point lads, they're invincible". MON changed this mentallity, as did signings like Sutton, Thompson, Lennon etc. Burns had Paul McStay as captain for God sake, what chance did we have?
TDBhoy
Celtic suck major donkey cock... come on RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
molesy
I take it Major Donkey Cock's your superior in the British Army bum boy?
TDBhoy
I think that Zurawski is a great player and that he was just knackered last season, He will do a great job for us this season.
swut6
And don't forget that Zurawski did score a few, even though he had problems...
Jamie1967
But MON also brought out the best in Larsson, Larsson said it himself, Strachan couldnt do the same if he tried. "most of [Strachans] signings have brought success to the club" No they havent really, Nakmura Borcu and Naylor have been the only hits. And thats means the rest of either miss, or undeiceded which means that a minority of players he has signed has brought sucess.
rk1888
fuc off molsey you skint a.rsed beggar! away and lick mintys c.ock...if you can find it, and while your looking, check his pockets for cash!
Skoosh
Nicely put Skoosh :D molsey, is that a refernce to michael mols? Another Rangers or should i say Celtic legend. I think he ranks with the great Sebo,Konterman and Frank DeBoear haha
