Celtic monitor winger Wilhelmsson

Celtic are thought to be tracking Swedish star Christian Wilhelmsson - but the presence of former England boss at Man City could convince the winger to move to England, while Spurs and Middlesbrough are also interested.

The 27-year-old Nantes player spent last season on-loan at AS Roma. Now that Nantes have been relegated, it has been suggested that Wilhelmsson is available for just 500,000 - a bargain for a player with 43 caps for Sweden.

However, the News of the World has claimed that Sven-Goran Eriksson wants to make his fellow Swede his first signing. With other English clubs also though to be monitoring developments, and it seems likely that Wilhelmsson will move to these islands, if not to Scotland.

Wilhelmsson is one of the fastest players in the Swedish national side and has caused top-defenders problems with his tricky play. While his goal-return isn't too spectacular, Wilhelmsson is more of a creative winner than a player who converts chances others create.

Examples of Wilhelmsson's pace can be see here and it's hard not to make comparisons with former Liverpool and Real Madrid star Steve McManaman. If Gordon Strachan managed to bring the winger to Parkhead, there is little doubt that Celtic's attacking potency would increase dramatically.

Certainly a player to keep an eye on during the next few weeks...

Another to add to the growing list :D. Good player at a good price, though.

I like him, he played very well in the world cup last year. Would he be a "wow" signing? Hes at his peak now, but if hes a right winger where would leave Nakamura to play, i think Naka would be better playing off the front 2 to be honest. Strachan should try that at least.

Not too sure if he's what we need - but having a bit of pace could help JVoH and whoever he plays with!

Wilhemsson would be a great signing. He would keep McGeady out of the team, which would be fine. He played on the left for Sweden as well as the right, and was great at the World Cup. We need to get henke on the phone to him, in order to get him to tell Sven to ***** off.

McGeady needs decent competition to get the most out of him, and this would be one way of doing it. A very versatile player, as you say IB, and he would cause mayhem among the slow SPL defences and in the CL, more importantly.

Wilhemsson is a class player and for 500k we shouldn't eveb think about it! I've seen him play for years both with Sweden and then Anderlecht and last season he spent with Roma and did well...

He would be a great player McGeady needs more competiton, Riordan should have more joy this season because McGeady is so preditable and poor at times.

If theres any truth in this I'm delighted, he has been linked with a move to Parkhead since the O'Neill era and I've watched him closely, a pacey player, good engine, tricky little bugger and gets stuck right in. Everything we need when Nakas not really interested!

Apparently he's off to Bolton, I don't think there was any truth in our interest, shame tho!
