Celtic were unable to prevent Motherwell from moving back into second place in the table after suffering only their fifth league defeat of the campaign - a 2-1 reverse at Fir Park.
Striker Georgios Samaras claimed his tenth goal of the season on returning to action but it was sandwiched in between efforts from Chris Humphrey and Michael Higdon.
However, the Hoops still remain a huge nineteen points clear at the top of the table with only nine games remaining.
Manager Neil Lennon earlier made five changes to his starting line-up but soon witnessed Nicky Law despatching a 25-yard free-kick wide.
Home midfielder Keith Lasley then had an effort from long-range deflect through to goalkeeper Fraser Forster after Anthony Stokes had failed to take advantage of a James Forrest cross towards the other end.
Kris Commons was next up for the visitors but his free-kick slipped beyond the far post while another Forrest delivery found Motherwell's Shaun Hutchinson's miscued clearance only threatening his own goal.
But it was the home side still forging ahead around the half-hour mark when Law's cross-shot was firmly converted at the far post by Humphrey.
Hoops forward Commons' speculative response from distance was always going wide before the newly-introduced Joe Ledley hoisted over early in the second-half.
Motherwell keeper Darren Randolph was then required to deny Commons on two separate occasions as Celtic chased an equaliser - which duly arrived as Samaras headed in Forrest's 63rd minute cross.
But the visitors were only level for ten minutes when Higdon volleyed in Law's deep cross at the far post to restore the home lead.
Welsh international Ledley then guided fellow substitute Gary Hooper's assist towards goal at the other end but keeper Randolph blocked before also thwarting both Commons and Forrest during late pressure.
