Celtic exit Europe

Celtic bid farewell to European competition for this season with a comprehensive 3-0 home defeat to AC Milan.

Brazilian forward Kaka headed the visitors into a twelfth-minute lead and defender Cristian Zapata added another early in the second-half.

Ten minutes later Mario Balotelli made in 3-0 - leaving the hosts certain to finish bottom of the group following Ajax defeating Barcelona 2-1.

Derk Boerrigter tried a second-minute effort from Charlie Mulgrew's corner but couldn't find the target as his side typically pushed early.

But Balotelli soon served warning at the other end when drilling wide until Kaka was left unattended to head in from Valter Birsa's corner.

The Hoops' reply had James Forrest delivering to the far post for Boerrigter to be denied by the covering Zapata.

Kris Commons and Boerrigter tried further efforts from distance, although Kaka nearly added a second goal when curling a shot narrowly wide.

Mulgrew then couldn't produce the finish to get past goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, who also gathered a Virgil van Dijk volley after the break.

Moments later substitute Antonio Nocerino, who had earlier replaced right-back Ignazio Abate, crossed for Zapata to double the lead.

Celtic's van Dijk saw a header ruled out for offside before Riccardo Montolivo allowed Balotelli to demonstrate his clinical finishing and wrap-up proceedings on the hour.
